Sports Physicals

To make sure an athlete can begin competing, many schools require sports physicals, also called pre-participation exams (PPE). Sports physicals consist of medical history and physical exams to make sure that the athlete is healthy enough to participate. The physical is designed to identify any high-risk disorder or condition, existing injury or potential problems to avoid future problems or rehabilitate an existing injury.

Our physicians are capable of performing the exam. In some cases, the school will set aside time for doctors to conduct sports physicals on-site.

On Demand & the Department of Transportation (DOT)

On Demand specializes in DOT regulations and has perfected working with employers to ensure DOT Compliance. Our affiliation with the Ohio Trucking Association (OTA) allows us to provide training, certification and services to many of Ohio’s commercial trucking organizations. DOT physicals are highly regulated for the drivers’ safety and are designed to detect physical, mental, and emotional issues that can affect a driver and their ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

What is a fit for duty physical?

In order to determine whether an individual is in an appropriate physical, mental and emotional state to perform the duties of a job, employers oftentimes require a fit-for-duty exam to test potential future or existing employees’ ability to do essential job tasks. These physicals help employers avoid costly workers’ compensation claims by identifying at-risk employees early on.

Employers are legally allowed to have a fit-for-duty test as a requirement to employment according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Uniform Guidelines to Employee Selection Procedures. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) also specifies that employers cannot discriminate against hiring a qualified worker with a disability.  Their disability, however, cannot prevent them from doing the essential functions of their job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Existing employees may be required to get a fit-for-duty test if:

  • There is documented evidence of an employee having difficulty performing essential functions of their job.
  • An employee is returning to work after a leave of absence
  • The employee requests an accommodation

What is a pre-employment physical?

Pre-employment physicals are included in fit-for-duty testing but are more generalized assessments that consist of medical history and a physical exam to determine if an employee is physically and mentally able to take on the responsibilities of the job. Whereas fit-for-duty physicals are matching a potential or existing employee to the duties of a specific job or task, pre-employment physicals assess the general wellness of an individual.
